Why Is Everyone Telling Us to Downsize When We Get Older?

And why is it wrong to still want more?

Ever since I passed middle age, people have been telling me it’s time to downsize. They assume if you aren’t part of a couple or your children moved out, you should get rid of your bigger place.

Your heart’s desire should be to move to a cute little apartment.

Why would you want to stay in that huge home you have? Houses need work and upkeep. You are now considered over the hill and too old to take care of it.

Get rid of all the possessions that you love. They only take up space. And they’ll be fewer items your children will have to deal with after you die. Now isn’t that a depressing thought? You are clearing out the things you love in preparation for death.

Downsize, and get a smaller home to live in.

Except that I still haven’t lived in the home I want.

Every single place I’ve ever moved into has been a place I didn’t choose. It was a place I could afford, and not a place I truly wanted.

I always had to choose the best choice out of the worst homes, when looking for a place to live.

My parents did not have that problem. They picked out a brand new home in their twenties. In those days, you could afford a beautiful home like that on one salary.

What a joy it would be to pick out the home I really want. How amazing would it be to live in a place I chose for myself.

Yet people are trying to choose for me. They insist an apartment or condo is a better choice for an older woman.

I dream of going to a model home and picking out a brand new home laid out exactly how I want. I long to choose brand new colors, cabinets, and recessed lighting. I long to have a spacious sunny kitchen, a beautiful master bath, a walk-in closet, and a sparkling pool in the backyard where I could swim for exercise.
