Should I use pee pads for potty training my dog?

There are are some situations where pee pads are a lifesaver. But they also come with trade-offs. The first question to ask yourself is whether your ultimate goal is for your dog to pee outside. If you are using pee pads as a temporary solution to avoid cleanup, you might want to reconsider.

The overall goal when housetraining a dog is to establish a consistent pattern that the dog recognizes and repeats. Generally, the pattern you want is for outside to be where pee and poo happens. For this reason, the pee pad can be confusing because it sends a conflicting message that it’s also okay to pee inside. If possible, it’s best to avoid this competing option entirely and just keep it simple: outside = potty.

There are some situations when a pee pad might be a necessity. For example, if you live in an apartment on the 30th floor, pee pads might be your best option. But in this situation, the pee pad might also be your long-term strategy as opposed to a temporary stopgap.
