How to Tweak macOS Mojave Dark Mode

If you switched to the new Dark Mode and started enjoying it in your daily routine then chances are you started noticing some aspects of macOS UI that weren’t apparent in the Light Mode. Now they are pretty visible and can ruin the consistency of dark UI.

One of them is transparency. In macOS interface there are elements that act like semitransparent diffusing glass, leaking some of the colours of its background and blurring it, turning it into a nice ambient effect. The Finders sidebar is one of them. It was so unobtrusive in light mode that I simply paid no attention to it, but now with the new dark UI it is more visible. If you’re ok with this you can leave it be and skip to the fonts tweaking. Personally I don’t like sidebar changing colours, I’d prefer it to stay dark grey all the time.

If you wish to disable it go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Display and toggle Reduce Transparency, or simply search for it in top right corner.

Another thing worth mentioning are the fonts. Having bright white text on a very dark background can be hard to read. We can’t choose the colour of the macOS text but we can nudge it’s brightness down a bit by disabling Font Smoothing. Since macOS has some of the best font rendering out there even non-smoothed fonts look perfect. The difference is so minuscule that disabling it looks like you’re just switching from bold fonts to normal.

This option is located in System Preferences > General at the bottom.

I noticed that disabling it made text more readable. Font smoothing does make glyphs nicer but at the cost of making them appear bolder. It does not seem very apparent with medium font sizes, but on small font sizes, that macOS uses for its UI, it does adds up.
