What I learned from Digital Minimalism

And why I will never use Social Media the same way again

Up until recently my social media use was pretty typical. I’d check it during coffee breaks at work, on the platform while waiting for my Ubahn, and every ‘free’ minute of my day.

I didn’t place any limitations or boundaries on how I used it. The concept of boundaries for Social Media hadn’t even occurred to me. However, over the last few months, as we’ve all been at home, the amount of time I’d begun to spend consuming content had increased dramatically.

I told myself it’s not so bad, but I wasn’t sure. So, out of curiosity, I enabled Screen Time on my phone. At the end of a week, I had my first report, and no matter what you think about your screen time usage, the numbers do not lie. I was alarmed to see I was averaging at about 3 hours per day for social media. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have been surprised. Ever since the transition to work from home, my productivity had reduced. I attributed this to summer, to distraction due to my partner always being home as well, chores, etc but once I saw my report I had to admit to myself that I had a problem.

I’d set my alarm on my phone so it’s the first thing I check when I open my eyes. I’d wake up looking at Instagram, randomly post to Twitter during the day. I’d started getting curious about TikTok (don’t judge me) and of course, every time I needed to know something (how do I stitch a button?) there was Youtube.

My phone went with me everywhere. It was next to my computer while I worked, on the kitchen counter while I cooked, in my pocket as I listened to Podcasts while I brushed my teeth.

I had Reddit open on a tab on my computer all day, and I spent the last 30 minutes of my day in bed, again, randomly scrolling through social media, or watching Netflix.

I was perpetually distracted because of the constant pinging and notifications, and of course, no one ever stops with watching just one video or scrolling through one story. Social Media is designed to be addictive, and I was an addict.
