Telling a story through multimedia

Tackling video packages, conducting interviews and taking the right photos

Since my last journal post, I have conducted my final interview for this story on the rock climbing and how its entered mainstream health and wellness in San Diego. The interview took place inside of the Aztec Recreation Center Climbing Wall located at San Diego State University. I talked to an instructor who teaches the Introduction to Rock Climbing course offered at the college and asked him a series of broad questions to gauge his expert opinion on the sport.

One question I’m still annoyed that I forgot to ask is “why do you think climbing is more popular now more than ever?” I think because I was trying to demonstrate the basics of the sport through the instructor’s perspective, I got caught up in the imagery and pursued a different angle. I have a lot of b-roll footage to work with and my interview was quite long, so I will have to find a way to shorten it to 1.5 minutes in length. I think this source speaks to what is appealing about the climbing community and my goal with this video package is to create a visual backbone for a story that may be unfamiliar to some.

My photos are extremely strong as well and demonstrate will tie this multimedia package together. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s all said and done.
