Is God male or Female

INTRODUCTION

When we see the beautiful blue sky and white clouds, shining stars of the dark night, adorable skyscraper mountains, amazing deep seas, plain land, placement of the universe, and all nature, an eagerness arises to know the force behind its operator. Even when we look at ourselves, the process of giving birth, from fertilization of the egg to fully formed human, the different operating systems in the body make many questions. There is someone who directs everything some energy is out there that we human naked eyes can’t see but only feel and believe and that is God. Gen.1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Which means God is out of time, space, and matter. God is beyond our limitations and our capacity, there is no measure of God. we can know only how much God has revealed. There are times God has revealed himself in different ways. But in other times in history, many questions arose regarding God. one of the issues that are in the mind of people is about the gender of God. What does he look like? Male or female?

1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.

God created mankind to have fellowship with Him but they failed to do it. Because of the sin they committed, they were expelled from the garden of Eden, and their relationship with God was broken. Since God is loving God, He wants back us with Him simultaneously, God is Justice. God sent His only one-begotten son into the world to have a reconciliation with mankind, where the Son of God lived a life that mankind failed to do. This is how God demonstrated He is loving at the same time Just.

But since no one has seen God and, God’s Son, Jesus Christ was incarnated as a man, people raised a question about God’s gender, is God male or female? There are different verses in the bible in which people stand over and expressed their point regarding God’s gender.

2. WRONG VIEWS ON GOD’S GENDER

There are different views about God’s gender. Here are some views that we are going to discuss.

2.1 Masculine View of God’s Gender

This view is the maximum accepted view about God’s gender. Many people hold the view that God is male. They assume that God is male. Here are some reasons or basis for this view.

2.1.1 Jesus’s Incarnation as a Man

Matthew 1:23 says,

2.1.2 The Use of the Masculine Pronoun

From the very start in the Bible, God refers to Himself using masculine pronouns (Gen. 1:27). Bible, Old Testament was written in Hebrew and, Ancient Hebrew had no grammatically neutral-gender pronouns, so all items were intentionally given a grammatical gender of masculine.

2.1.3. The use of Masculine Metaphors and Imaginary.

Many times, different metaphors and imagery were used to describe God or the nature of God. the imagery used in the Bible also confirms that God has chosen to refer to Himself as possessing male qualities. Several metaphors and titles are used to describe God. There are hundreds of references to God as a Father, King, and Husband.

· God as Father (Lk. 11:2; 1 Cor. 8:6; Deut. 32:6; Mal. 2:10 etc.)

· God is as king (not a queen) (Ps. 24:10; 47:2; Isa. 44: 6; 1 Tim. 1:17);

· God as a husband (Isa. 54:5; Hos. 2:2, 16,19 etc.)

· God as a Bridegroom (Jon. 3:29; Matt 9:15; Lk. 2:19; Rev. 22: 17; Eph. 5:25–27; 2 Cor: 11:2; etc.)

2.2. FEMININE VIEW ON GOD’S GENDER

2.2.1. The Use of Famine Metaphors and Imaginary.
The Hebrew word for “Spirit” (ruach) and the Aramaic word (rucha) is grammatically feminine and some early churches referred to the Holy Spirit in feminine terms. There are several references where God’s nature has been shown as feminine.

· In one place a simile is used to refer to God comforting His people like a mother comforts her child (Isaiah 66:13), a woman in labor (Is. 42:14). Even there, God does not say He is a mother, only that He will comfort His people like a mother.

· Isaiah 49:15 is another verse that mentions a mother in a description of God, but it is not even a comparison; it is a contrast: God cares more for His people than a nursing mother does her baby.

· In ancient Israel, midwives were always female. Occasionally, God describes himself as acting as a midwife, assisting in the delivery of a newborn. (Ps. 22:9–10)

· One of the few exceptions to the maternal imagery is in Ps. 123:2 where both a master of male servants and a mistress of female servants are used as similes for God.
