Is ghosting illegal?

Before you swipe right on other writers, let me quickly introduce myself (bear with me, it’s my first post)!

My name is Ariane and my answer to the usual ice breaker question — “What superpower do you wish you had?” — has always been MIND READING! Now, I am lucky I get to do that for a living and deep dive into the wealth of insights Google data has to offer.

My favorite tool is Google Trends and it’s public, so you too can play around and uncover great nuggets. I plan to share some of my findings with you so feel free to comment, request and share. It’ll be fun!

No wonder this practice is raising a lot of questions and users are increasingly turning to Google to make sense of it. The first big spike you see in the graph reflects the release of the survey by POF. We then see a steady search for the term as online dating and, by association, ‘ghosting’ is growing strong. So much so that, Ariana Grande released a song named ‘Ghosting’ in February 2019 (latest peak).

Looking at top searches around ‘Ghosting’ we see there are still a lot of people trying to make sense of it (“What is ghosting?”, “What does ghosting mean?”, “ghosting definition”). We can hypothesize these are the poor souls just hitting the apps/online dating market and coming to the harsh realizations it brings (ok, dating is not all bad, there are pockets of good and hope out there!) Some just want to sing along to Ariana’s latest hit or simply laugh it off (searching for “ghosting meme”).

Google autocomplete is my second favorite tool. It gives you a quick pulse on what people most search for in your area. My fellow New Yorkers and I have a lot of questions. After all, we may wonder…Is ghosting ok? Immature? Illegal? Mean? or simply acceptable according to the new dating playbook?

I tend to side with illegal ;)
