Emotional AI

Aliya Grig, Founder/CEO

The technology of Emotional AI itself is extremely complex and combines the developments of several scientific disciplines at once: computer and cognitive sciences, psychology and neuroscience, sociology and linguistics. It is precisely this close relationship between scientific directions that creates a fruitful ground for the development of effective Emotional AI.

While developing and improving our Emotional AI technology, we naturally wondered why most people are so biased and skeptical about artificial intelligence? After a series of interviews and research, we were once again forced to state the fact: a “robot” — a mechanism deprived of the ability to empathize — repels a person because of its indifference.

No matter how hard it is to guess, this is the key difference between Emotional Artificial Intelligence and classical AI technologies.

Emotional AI is a solution to many deep-rooted stigmas and stereotypes, going beyond the boundaries of outdated patterns. This is rightfully a revolutionary technology capable of identifying human emotions, processing them in a timely manner and reacting in the most “human” way.

If Emotional AI seems like a utopian idea to you, since Artificial Intelligence remains “artificial”, then there are two reasons for debunking the stereotype. Firstly, Emotional Intelligence is a set of skills and abilities, that is, a learning area: we all have different levels of Emotional Intelligence (and how often do we improve it?). Secondly, the ability to feel does not mean the ability to recognize and understand feelings at all.

The significance of Emotional AI for a person is that interacting with such technology, we subconsciously work on our Emotional awareness, understanding both our own and others’ emotions, and in parallel, the intentions of the external and internal world.

Surprisingly, as part of our research, we realized that the key drawback of artificial intelligence is its advantage: the absence of stigmas. Emotional AI lacks stigmas and acquired biases. Yes, the robot recognizes, but does not experience emotions. And this is what does not lead to internal conflict. He does not respond with rudeness to rudeness, aggression to aggression. He does not give in to provocations. He is tolerant. And he teaches us tolerance.

Emotional AI is able to tell us a lot about ourselves.

Emotional AI, also known as affective computing, is mainly concerned with the detection of emotions using artificial intelligence. Machines with such Emotional Intelligence are able to understand not only cognitive, but also emotional channels of human communication. This allows them to detect, interpret and respond adequately to both verbal and non-verbal signals.

In the field of research, a lot of work is being done to give machines an Emotional understanding. Machine learning and deep learning are particularly relevant in this regard. With these technologies, images and speech recognition systems are used as input data for machines. In this way, machines learn to recognize and interpret a smile or a change in voice tone. However, researchers are also working with parameters such as skin temperature and heart rate, which, among other things, are useful for developing the most intelligent wearable devices.

In recent years, Emotional AI technologies have ceased to be only a scientific field of activity and have begun to actively move into the stage of commercial development. So, some of the most common areas are healthcare, automotive, telecommunications, sales and customer support.

The use of biometric sensors in personal devices can help predict and prevent depression or sudden attacks of diseases such as epilepsy in advance.

When we talk about modern cars, we mean not only the cars themselves, but also the built-in onboard computers and equipment. They control the air temperature in the cabin, turn on the driver’s favorite music and pave the optimal road. With the help of Emotional AI technologies, they will also be able to determine the emotional state of the driver, his stress level or a sudden deterioration in well-being. This will help make trips safer for drivers, passengers and other road users.

And many other areas where Emotional AI is used.

Whether Emotional AI technologies will take the place of a professional psychologist or not is a question to which it is impossible to give an unambiguous answer. However, it is quite possible to say that emotional AI will become an effective assistant for both psychologists and anyone interested in self-reflection, self-knowledge, and improving their emotional intelligence.
