California Heist

Trinity rounded up the children in before care, instigating a makeshift karate class. Directing everyone through the different poses, she demonstrated what she learned in her class so the others could follow along. She took her role as instructor very seriously, commanding respect and obedience. Distracted by the next move, she didn’t notice as her younger sister, Tamara, and Adrianna stealthily crept away from the group.

Sneaking off to a corner, the pair of friends began concocting a scheme. Eager to hatch their plan, they deliberated over the details to ensure their plan was flawless. They decided the best mode of transport would be by plane, but the question was how to hitch a ride on a plane while trapped at school. The girls eyed the playground out the cafeteria windows, glaring at the tall, chain-link fence that surrounded the school perimeter. The fence was a definite roadblock to their escape; a teacher would definitely notice if they tried to climb over it.

Tamara and Adrianna huddled together to brainstorm a foolproof solution. Victory lit up their eyes as they noticed the swing set inconspicuously sitting on the playground. The swing set held the key. The girls excitedly discussed their plan, squealing with delight at the prospect of using the swings to obtain freedom. Serena noticed the clamor and became curious, but the girls enthusiastically shared their idea.

“The swings are perfect!” the two girls gushed in sync. “If we swing super high, we can soar up into the sky!”

“What do you plan to do up in the sky?” Serena inquired, unsure of what plot the two would attempt to unleash this time.

“We’d be so high we would hit an airplane!” Tamara declared.

Adrianna swiftly added, “The airplane would then deliver us to an island!”

“It’d be California! We’d make our big escape!”

Serena watched as the two became lost in their fantasy, raising a brow at Sofia, who had just arrived. “Since when did California become an island?” she asked.

“It’s not an island,” Sofia remarked. “They must be confused or thinking of something else.”

Adrianna and Tamara, oblivious to the audience’s commentary, were still lost in the glamor and grandeur of their imagination. “Oh! And after we go to California, we can go to Hollywood!” Tamara babbled with fervor.

“This will be great!” Adrianna proclaimed, eyes aglow. “But… we’re going to need some money. It’d be boring to get there and not be able to do anything.”

“Hmm…. true, but where are we going to get it? I don’t have any,” Tamara remarked.

“I’ve got it!” Adrianna promptly turned to Serena and declared, “You’re going to help us! You’re really good at art, so make us some hundred-dollar bills!”

“I could draw some money, but that doesn’t address the issue of it being fake. You’re not going to be able to use it,” Serena pointed out, gathering some paper and green colored pencils.

“Don’t worry about that!” Adrianna assured. “We’re going to need LOTS and LOTS of money, so make some two-hundred-dollar bills, too.”

Serena began drawing their “money,” wondering how they thought a two-hundred-dollar bill would be considered real. At least hundred-dollar bills actually existed, but their counterfeit money definitely would raise red flags-not to mention their escape route was unlikely. She shrugged and let the girls have their fun, as Sofia eagerly watched the drawing process. As Serena finished each bill, Adrianna and Tamara would cut them out with delicate care and precision, not wishing to harm their precious “money.”

“I can’t wait to go shopping in California!” Adrianna cried, counting her pretend money.

“We can get high-heeled boots!” Tamara declared.

Adrianna stopped what she was doing to questioningly stare at her friend. “Why would we need high-heeled boots?”

“Well,” Tamara began, “teachers wear them, so we could, too!”

“I guess… I’d rather get new clothes and bags,” Adrianna replied, becoming lost in her fantasy of cute clothing and accessories. “OH! Then we can hit up the chocolate store! We’d get so much yummy chocolate! Yum!!”

“Out of curiosity,” Serena interjected as she finished another “hundred-dollar bill” for the pair, “how do you plan on buying all of that? I doubt the cashier would willingly take this money.”

“Oh, that’s easy!” Tamara proclaimed triumphantly, waving several bills in the air. “We’ll distract them, saying there’s a big commotion outside. Then, when they run off to go investigate, we’ll switch this money with the money in the register! Then we’ll have mountains of money to use!”

“Wouldn’t they notice the change in the register, though?” Serena pointed out.

“They might,” Adrianna answered, “but they would just blame the customers still in line for that. We’d be long gone.”

Serena mused that it wouldn’t be as simple as that, especially if the stores had security cameras, but she surmised that fact didn’t cross the girls’ minds. They were determined their concocted scheme would be a huge success; they didn’t seem likely to listen, but the point was moot, regardless. Their plan existed in the realm of fantasy, so there was no harm in letting them have their fun.

Cackling as they counted their money, Adrianna and Tamara beamed. “Now all we have to do is catch that plane!”

Overhearing this bit as she entered the cafeteria, Amy began rummaging around in her backpack and pulled out some pink raffle tickets. Handing the tickets over to the pair of schemers, she remarked, “Here, have these tickets; this way you can save money on plane tickets.”

Snatching the tickets from Amy’s extended hand, Tamara and Adrianna began leaping for joy, squealing. They could hardly contain their excitement; things kept getting better and better. “Where’d you get these tickets?” they asked.

“Oh, I have a bunch of them,” Amy answered, sorting through her backpack as she searched for one of her various creative projects to continue. “I didn’t bring all of them with me, but there’s a bunch more at home.”

Seeing Amy with a long strip of tickets, Tamara yanked them out of her hand; she was already plotting all sorts of shenanigans. “Thanks!”

Amy frowned, unhappy with Tamara’s rude and greedy behavior; it wasn’t like she offered to give them all of her tickets. “Don’t take all of them,” she chastised. “I was going to use them, too.”

“Oh, okay,” Tamara replied, tearing off a portion of the tickets. Handing half of them back to Amy, she stated, “You can have these back.”

Satisfied with getting a good portion back, Amy nodded her head in gratitude, eager to embark on her next creative project. Her backpack was brimming with different artistic endeavors and creations; gathering a few more supplies from her backpack, she settled down at a nearby table and got to work.

Separating each ticket, Adrianna and Tamara grabbed a plastic container to safeguard their tickets and money before packing for their trip. The pair was eager to finally go out to the playground to commence their ultimate escape plan, discussing the last-minute details in hushed whispers.

Sofia began nibbling on her lower lip, worried about the other girls’ scheme. Anxiety overcoming her, she asked, “Shouldn’t we call their parents? They’re up to no good and want to steal and ditch school for another state.”

Serena eyed the two schemers as they pressed their faces up to the window, longingly gazing at the swing set as their breaths fogged up the glass. She shook her head, reassuring, “Even if they do get on the swing set and try to jump off, they won’t get very far.”

Sofia looked unconvinced, so Serena added, “They won’t be able to get high enough to get over the fence, let alone reach an airplane. That will halt the rest of their plan, so there’s no need to worry.”

Mulling that tidbit over, Sofia considered the likelihood of their plan’s success before announcing, “Okay, but I’m still going to keep a close eye on them to make sure they don’t commit crimes or break any rules!”

As soon as before care went out to the playground, Tamara and Adrianna made a mad dash for the swing set, keen to set their plan into motion. Sofia insisted on covertly tailing the pair, determined to keep the two out of trouble. Once Sofia realized the wannabe escape artists couldn’t actually fly off the swings to reach a plane, she breathed a sigh of relief. Recognizing the pair’s scheme couldn’t cause their desired mischief and thievery, she finally relaxed and returned to Serena’s side. Sofia pulled her newest book out of her backpack and began reading the tale of a sparkly unicorn befriending a yeti. All was right with the world; the rules remained unbroken, and the heist was a bust, so there was no reason to fret. The friendship of a yeti and unicorn was much more appealing than staking out Tamara and Adrianna.
